Ok- so how many of you have this….
in your house? Go ahead… just admit it! It’s Brassy and it’s just eating at you every time you look up at it! OK, maybe that is just me- but it has been bugging me for the last four years we have lived in this house- but it works… so the moola to replace it was hard to justify.
Sooooo…. what to do? take a baseball bat to it Paint it! Why not? ok, what paint… well how about some craft paint and some spray paint and whatever else I feel like using because why the heck not?! can’t look worse in my mind.
So I started by getting up there to see what that fan was all about- it’s not that hard people- it is just a couple screws holding each blade on- so- off the blades came! and then a couple more screws and off the metal brackets off of the blades came!
Took those pieces outside and found my fave spray paint… Rust-oleum’s ORB (Oil Rubbed Bronze) and a glossy white I had to touch up the blades
a couple quick coats…
DUDE. I am SO DOING THIS in our bedroom. That uglyass fan has been making me CRAZY.
Great Idea! I have been thinking of doing this in my kitchen….but was to scared to remove the entire fan! So using a brush worked? Wish me luck I am going to try it!

Thanks! I think you will find it pretty easy- and I actually used a sponge not a brush- it cuts down on the strokes you see- and although I would usually use one of the cheapo sponge things- I bought a little bit nicer one (see post for pic) and I think it did make a difference! Thanks for looking and let me know how it goes!!
I think you have helped a lot of people with your tutorial! Fans seem to go out of style quickly, but none of us want to replace them. Great job!
WOw…that looks amazing! I can’t believe the transformation you did to the base of that fan! 🙂 You are doing a great job with your projects!!
OKAY. So I just did this (sort of) with my hated fan and I agonized over the brass but couldn’t bring myself to paint it. I like your idea and SOMEDAY if I can bring myself to get back up there and take those blasted blades off, I Might paint the rest.
That looks so great! Much more modern looking.
I have TWO Ugly fans in my kitchen that we inherited when we moved in last July. I’ve already replaced the glass on them and that helped a bit but never in a million years would I have thought to paint the brass! I saw another blogger who had painted her blades and added a little emblishment too them and they looked AWESOME….another thing to add to my ever growing list…LOL
Yes…it was Lauren who posted right above me who painted up her blades and emblished them!
Well, I thought taking a baseball bat to it would be fun and weirdly cathartic, but your end product looks great–and probably left less of a mess. 🙂 Thanks for sharing!
so simple! looks great!
That is a wonderful redo and you saved lots of cash over buying a new fan! I have a brass-mount fan in my master bedroom and I have thought about taking down the fittings and making them white. I think you just sent me over the edge!
I’m your newest follower! And I found you from the TDC linky party.
wow! that does look soooo much better! i think that brass must’ve been the thing in the late 90s/early 2000s because i see a lot of it (in our house too)… glad to see it go! found you through saved by love link party. i am a new follower. if you have time, pop on over to my spot and have a look see. if you like it, stick around and follow me back. andie @ http://crayonfreckles.blogspot.com/
That’s awesome!!!! And you’re hilarious.
I just stumbled onto your blog today! And here I was thinking I was the only chick crazy enough to do this! I took the whole fan down (which is SUPER easy! Come on ladies, you can do it!), taped off a few things, sanded it down a little and went to town spray painting it with the oil rubbed bronze! It turned out AMAZING! And spent only $12! Woohoo!
Love all your redos!
