It’s that fun time of year again!! Swap it Like It’s Hot, where a whole bunch of us get together and find thrifty randoms and send them to our friends to transform into whatever they can reimagine and I love it! This year my items came from our fearless leader, Charlotte, from Ciburbanity, and I decided to use them to spruce up our bar cart for fall.

Our antique bar cart got a little make over during the One Room Challenge that you can see here but it was time to change out a few things to try and entice fall to head into Texas;)

Charlotte sent me several fun things but I decided that these two were the stand outs to help in my mini make-over. This little tray and a wooden stand.

bar11

I actually liked the pattern on the tray, but the colors just weren’t working for me, which is the beauty of buying things and seeing them in different ways! All this tray needed was some black spray paint to get me started… and yes, this may be one of my children completely wiping out in the background of this photo… no children were harmed in the spray painting of this tray!

bar12

I used some glossy, black spray paint and gave it a shiny fresh coat! Then I decided to add my personality into the project… a few white stick on letters accomplished that because I got jokes people! My husband may not think I’m as funny as I do but he’s got the rest of his life to figure that one out.

bar2

So a man walks into a bar… and he says… can there ever be enough blue and white in a house? No! and that’s not even a funny question! You know I had to have my blue and white but I love the mix with the black and white and peach… yes, peach! I brought some peach accents with my DIY curtains into the dining room and love the soft contrast it brings.  That peach, velvet pillow cover though, was a recent Target purchase (lots of colors) for under $10- you can find it here and you’re welcome… love! bar1

The wood base was perfect with an old glass cylinder I had.  I simply filled it with these wood beads that once again, I found at Target, and then added some of my little, Christmas battery powered lights for some fall ambiance! So easy but added great texture and interest! For you locals out there, I am not going to lie… there were two boxes at my Target and I snatched them both up- I’m sure they will restock soon but they are on sale online and it is an unbelievably good deal if you compare prices to the wood beads they sell at Pottery Barn, etc, so I suggest you nab them if you can.

bar7

bar8

Best advice on decorating I can give… decorate for you… this isn’t going to be everyone’s style and that’s why I love seeing what other’s do with similar things because to some a tray is just a tray but to some it’s way to remind their husband that they are funny every time he sees it 😉

bar4

And FYI in case I haven’t encouraged you to spend enough moola at Target already, that is in fact a fake fiddle leaf fig tree… and I couldn’t be more proud of a fake plant if I tried.  I actually had to ask our store manager and these will only be sold at some stores so once again, if you can grab it online I would for sure- they are so real looking and obviously for me the biggest plus is you can’t kill it!

So now I get to send you on your way to my friend Laurie over at Vin’yet Etc. who I sent this little group of thrifted finds- I can’t wait to see what she did with them!

This year I wanted to create a Thanksgiving table setting that was a bit more eclectic.  I got a ton of inspiration from magazines and combined several aspects that I fell in love with- but you know me- it had to be on my own budget 🙂  But I was excited to set my new table for the first time! You can see how I made this table for $80 here!

To add to the fun, I got some friends to link up their table setting as well and you can find those links at the bottom of the post!

ThanksgivingTables

The only things I bought to add to my table this year were some vintage saucers/ small plates and faux fur to make the place mats.  I had fun wandering around my favorite thrift store and gathering any little plates I could find and then picking out my favorites for a mix of colors and patterns.  I have always had white plates and got some blue salad plates a long time ago so I knew I would have a simple base with those.

I wanted to add some fun texture so I bought some faux fur at the fabric store and just cut it up to the sizes I wanted- no sewing for this girl! Ok, enough chit chat, who’s ready for Turkey?!

ThanksgivingTable4

ThanksgivingTable7

ThanksgivingTable3

All of the little plates were between 3 and 6 dollars so they were a super cheap, easy way to add a little whimsy.

ThanksgivingTable6

The centerpiece was a fun mix of finds.  I found this beautiful set of bells at the thrift store and then the wish bone and gold dipped feathers were Hobby Lobby finds!  The feathers are sneaky though… they are actually Christmas tree ornaments!  Don’t be surprised if they pop up again for Christmas decor…

ThanksgivingTable5

In fact, with a few substitutions this table can flip right over to Christmas Decor!  But first… Thanksgiving.

We have been without a dining room table for about a year now.  Hold your gasps.  I sold our old one because it was just not me and we never sat at it! It has been heaven to have the space to work on furniture during the summer as well, when I can’t possibly get paint to dry in the garage.

But the holiday season is upon us and I got an itch to have a nice dining area again! I knew I didn’t want to buy anything expensive and I also wanted to be able to disassemble easily should I need the space again.  So I decided to build one, but I wanted to try and give it some more interest than just a few boards.  This turned into me trying to recreate a live edge table!

I was aware that this might not turn out how I had hoped but decided I could sand it out if I hated it or make it into fire wood.  Here was my inspiration…

Screen Shot 2015-11-05 at 8.33.52 AM

Source: Houzz

I wasn’t going to be able to create the gorgeous thick wood like this one due to the weight of it and the fact that I would need to be able to raise my children after I built it.   But I loved the pretty lines!

Materials Used to make a 72 inch Dining Table:

  1. 2 8×12 boards (outer boards)
  2. 1 8×10 board (center board)
  3. 2 small backer boards (I just used scrap wood)
  4. gloves
  5. eye protection
  6. belt sander
  7. wood glue
  8. wood screws
  9. wood pre-stain solution (I used Minwax Pre- Stain)
  10. stain (I used
  11. poly (I used Triple Thick Varathane)
  12. brushes

I have finally learned my lesson- make my list and have everything right on hand before I start! And yes, there are affiliate links included but that is just so you can easily see what I am using- I wasn’t provided with any product for this project.

DIYLiveEdgeTable15

I clamped down my first board (the belt sander will send your board flying if not clamped) and then with my eye protection and gloves on (safety first), I started sanding away! I was cautious at first but quickly realized that I wanted there to be bigger notches so I spaced them out but just started making notches and then smoothing them out to blend with the wood.  I also sanded down all the edges on the one side to be rounded.

DIYLiveEdgeTable16

I put wood glue between the boards, and also screwed a backer board with wood glue to the back on two places.  Once that was dry, I sanded the top all over to make sure it was an even surface.

At this point, I used the pre-stain.  It just ensures that the stain goes on evenly.  I then brushed on the stain! I used a mixture of Ash and Golden Oak.  Once that was dry, it was time for the poly.  I am super paranoid about letting poly dry so I always follow the instructions to a tee and sometimes even give it a bit longer to make sure it’s hardened between coats.

Enough chit chat, right? Once dry, I attached two trestle bases from Ikea for a whopping $15 each! But ya want to know what $15 gets you? No way to attach them to a base! what?! Annoying.  So I decided to add another cross bar underneath to let the base have a ridge holding it in place.  The pictures may explain it better:)

DIYLiveEdgeTable8

DIYLiveEdgeTable9

The stain really helped the sanded details to stand out and I couldn’t be happier with my 6 seat table for a grand total of about $80!

DIYLiveEdgeTable4

If I didn’t need it to be light and mobile, I would have liked it to be a thicker wood, but this is the perfect solution for my needs! And I’ll be back later this week to show you it all set up for Thanksgiving!

It’s not always beautiful vignettes and roses around here.  I really love when fall arrives and have every desire to decorate with pumpkins and gourds and all that good stuff… but it’s also sports and school and before I know it is time to decorate for Christmas!

So here’s the nitty gritty… I’ve teamed up with some of my other favorite bloggers to show you the real deal! the shortcuts and the ugly truth!

lazygirl

There are dirty secrets in blog land… and dirty is the key word.  The beautiful mantel you see there… yeah, it was covered in legos and trucks before I threw everything on the other side of the room to get the shot of the cute Fall Decor.  Now on one hand I feel a bit bad about the dishonesty of that- but on the other, you aren’t coming to this website for a look at clutter!  You don’t want inspiration on how to have your house look like crap… so that’s just kind of the nature of the beast.

FallTour20

FallTour15

FallTour14

Just never mind all that chaos… unless you prefer the dump truck as a centerpiece.  But above the chaos I can still manage a little glamour shot 😉

FallTour13And why not coordinate with the rest of toys?! That Star Wars pumpkin was just a must!

FallTour12My other go to vignette area is the entry way.  It just make me happy to have a pretty entrance into our home.

FallTour8Now really… this is where the lazy comes in! A couple pumpkins and some greenery changed the whole feel of the space… Lazy and wonderful! Texas Pillow was from here.

FallTour7

FallTour6A couple other little faux pumpkins get scattered around as well just to fake the awesome fall decor…

FallTour10

The only thing I purchased this year was actually found in the Christmas Decor at Hobby Lobby and I have to share because its a serious steal!  I have seen these pretty beads adorning vases and lamps floating around but have been less than thrilled with the prices- but I spied these wooden beads and scooped some strands up! $4.99 at 50% off was just fine with me!

FallTour3

Pottery Barn has a couple that I love- but this price is waaaaay more my speed:) and if you wanted a different color well then grab your spray paint!

I hope you will jump through and check out these other fun Fall Tours! Or pin here to check them out later!

I do like decorating for fall- but definitely don’t put out as much as Christmas.

I like to just add a few things here and there that can last from October through November.  I added a couple fun little things to my mantle- This little acorn tea-light holder was given to me by my oldest, dearest friend and I love, love, love it! And the little cross stitch Pumpkin sign I couldn’t resist getting at an antiques mall recently.

Old is new again people!

These orange faux pumpkins were from Hobby Lobby a few years ago and I just love the color it adds up on my bookshelves! and the little burlap pumpkin was also a Hobby Lobby find… I swear I don’t go there every day… kinda.

And this adorable little ceramic pumpkin I picked up at a garage sale a long time ago and I just paired it with this little glass medicine jar that I got at Michaels.

Of course I have our real pumpkins outside and some fake spider webs in the bushes- which is the only decorating that interests the boys in any way;) And you can find my tutorial for my painted $1 Store Pumpkins here and our Fall Table Scape here!
Do y’all do a lot of fall decorating? I am about to gear up for Christmas!

A bunch of amazing bloggers have been participating in what they call- Knocktober- and showing how creative they are at knocking off some great designs!
I decided to do my own little project but I decided to knock off another blogger whose project I loved so much! I want to give her full credit- Jennifer at The Chronicles of Home made the cutest Faux Antlers and I just had to have some of my own!

I started with an unfinished wood plaque from Michaels- and stained it Rust-Oleums Golden Oak- I chose a lighter stain because I knew I wanted to hang this on the inside of my front door and it is black, so I didn’t want it to get lost-

After staining, I took out my trusty gold leaf pen and just traced the outline to pretty it up- and ya know I will use that pen on anything I can think of!!
After sending out my assistants (ie… my two little boys) to find some sticks- I just hot glued them on! I did go ahead and attach a hook for hanging on the back.  The ribbon I just put up on the door with double sided tape so that it looked like it was holding it but wasn’t.
So fun and really so easy!

I hope your week is wonderful!

For Fall decorating this year, I wanted to do a pretty table setting, but wanted to keep it cool colors instead of the typical reds and oranges.
In my navy and white dining room, I decided to play off my favorite color combo which is blue and green and gold.  I happened to find this pretty green and white striped table cloth at Ikea and also this navy blue runner.  I didn’t want the whole table covered so I just folded the table cloth to the length I wanted which was the same as the navy runner.
After that I brought out an old bread bowl and put my gold silverware and some gold candle sticks in it- and added my two blue and white vases to flank the sides.  Some dollar store gold chargers under my white plates and my white butter dish and gravy boat and voila!

I’m thinking I may try to keep this arrangement but just change out a couple things for Christmas decor… but ya know… I may completely change my mind again…;)

I love seasonal decorating, but when it stays so hot through September here, it’s hard to motivate me to get out all of my fall and Halloween goodies! But my little ones love the Halloween stuff in particular so they usually ask me where all the pumpkins are after they have seen all of our more productive neighbor’s decor up;)
This year I wanted some more pumpkins and gourds but I wanted to have a more neutral display with them.  I went up to the dollar store and gathered about five small ones and brought them home and got to work!

I used everything I had on hand- some Annie Sloan Chalk paint in French Linen, Duck Egg, and Pure White and some dark wax.  This was a pretty easy project- just painted them some different colors and then put a very small amount of dark wax on them and to add some more pretty I just put a little rub and buff on the stems!

After they were all dry I sprayed them with an acrylic sealer that gave them a little shine and voila! I love them- simple- but festive….

I may as well tell you that I also got antsy for the ten minutes of dry time and decided to paint a couple of picture frames that were a bit blah to me… basically because they were holding still… I love quick little make-overs!

I also threw together a simple fall table setting- but because this is our do homework, eat at, sleep on, paint on, saw on, kind of table- it can’t be much! But I saw this throw rug at Ikea for next to nothing and loved the colors and texture it brought it- and why would I put it on the floor? Rugs on floors are for amateurs! 😉 and a simple wheat arrangement with some corks I had, made a pretty easy center piece.

And here are some more pretties- for now my pumpkins are in a cloche- and you can see a sneak peak of the hutch- I will be ready to show y’all that this next week!

Happy Fall Y’all!

I did this project awhile ago and actually have had it hanging for most of the fall- and it makes me happy every time I pass by it!
I saw it on Pinterest and with my love of all things photos it seemed like fun!
You can click here for link to inspiration.

And here is what I did!

I started with an oval twig wreath and bought about 20 mini frames from Hobby Lobby (50% off) oh and a couple sparklier ones from Pier 1- I then arranged them on the wreath to get an idea of how many vertical and horizontal pics I would need.  Then I printed out black/white copies just on regular paper of all of my fave pics.

I changed mine up a little bit in that I got an oval instead of a circle twig wreath to make it a bit easier to hang the pictures on.I took each frame and removed the stand on the back, which leaves a little metal piece that you can easily put a floral wire through to attach it to the wreath.  A bit time consuming but worth it!

After I had finished attaching all of the pics, I got some burlap and fun ribbon to hang it- but when I was looking for the perfect spot- I decided to try it directly on top of a magnolia wreath I had hanging in my entry and really like it with the green popping out behind.  Happy Accident!
So here she is in all her glory- and I really did just print out the pics on regular printer paper and you really can’t tell when they are that small- I just changed the option in printing to be a 3×3 and it was that simple!

Hope you are all having fun getting ready for the holidays! I think a fun Christmas bow will be all this needs to transition right over!
