The stockings where hung, the presents were wrapped… then all hell broke loose and the only safe space was the dining room!

Similar Shirts | Wrapping Paper |

This year was very special because I got new dishes! I can remember my Mom getting special dishes on Christmas and I’m so excited to have my very own… and you won’t believe it but… they are blue and white! I know, you are shocked.  This Christmas Table Setting is my favorite and will be used for many years to come.

I feel these blue and white dishes were just meant to be in my home.  Just nod your head in agreement.   I might have needed the matching platter as well.  I mean it was all on sale (still is actually)!

The bowls are my favorite and I will keep them on display in my hutch.  They match my thrifted acrylic blue napkin holders perfectly!  I have thrifted most of my silver as well but you can find similar pieces here.   For other room sources, you can find them in the Dining Room Make-Over!

The Holiday Desert Plates, which are currently out of stock but could possibly come back, are another favorite, but these are an amazing second option (and on sale) and it was a hard choice between the two for me!

And how could I forget the bar cart?! It had to get prepped for some holiday entertaining!

The drink shakers were a black friday present to myself.  Stop judging.  I saved so much money on everyone else it just made sense.   And the antique drink stirrers are about my favorite holiday decor ever!

We are ready to have a beautiful dinner and then carry it into a Happy New Year and I wish the same to you all!

It’s that fun time of year again!! Swap it Like It’s Hot, where a whole bunch of us get together and find thrifty randoms and send them to our friends to transform into whatever they can reimagine and I love it! This year my items came from our fearless leader, Charlotte, from Ciburbanity, and I decided to use them to spruce up our bar cart for fall.

Our antique bar cart got a little make over during the One Room Challenge that you can see here but it was time to change out a few things to try and entice fall to head into Texas;)

Charlotte sent me several fun things but I decided that these two were the stand outs to help in my mini make-over. This little tray and a wooden stand.

bar11

I actually liked the pattern on the tray, but the colors just weren’t working for me, which is the beauty of buying things and seeing them in different ways! All this tray needed was some black spray paint to get me started… and yes, this may be one of my children completely wiping out in the background of this photo… no children were harmed in the spray painting of this tray!

bar12

I used some glossy, black spray paint and gave it a shiny fresh coat! Then I decided to add my personality into the project… a few white stick on letters accomplished that because I got jokes people! My husband may not think I’m as funny as I do but he’s got the rest of his life to figure that one out.

bar2

So a man walks into a bar… and he says… can there ever be enough blue and white in a house? No! and that’s not even a funny question! You know I had to have my blue and white but I love the mix with the black and white and peach… yes, peach! I brought some peach accents with my DIY curtains into the dining room and love the soft contrast it brings.  That peach, velvet pillow cover though, was a recent Target purchase (lots of colors) for under $10- you can find it here and you’re welcome… love! bar1

The wood base was perfect with an old glass cylinder I had.  I simply filled it with these wood beads that once again, I found at Target, and then added some of my little, Christmas battery powered lights for some fall ambiance! So easy but added great texture and interest! For you locals out there, I am not going to lie… there were two boxes at my Target and I snatched them both up- I’m sure they will restock soon but they are on sale online and it is an unbelievably good deal if you compare prices to the wood beads they sell at Pottery Barn, etc, so I suggest you nab them if you can.

bar7

bar8

Best advice on decorating I can give… decorate for you… this isn’t going to be everyone’s style and that’s why I love seeing what other’s do with similar things because to some a tray is just a tray but to some it’s way to remind their husband that they are funny every time he sees it 😉

bar4

And FYI in case I haven’t encouraged you to spend enough moola at Target already, that is in fact a fake fiddle leaf fig tree… and I couldn’t be more proud of a fake plant if I tried.  I actually had to ask our store manager and these will only be sold at some stores so once again, if you can grab it online I would for sure- they are so real looking and obviously for me the biggest plus is you can’t kill it!

So now I get to send you on your way to my friend Laurie over at Vin’yet Etc. who I sent this little group of thrifted finds- I can’t wait to see what she did with them!

The big reveal in my One Room Challenge was last week and the master bedroom is so much lighter and brighter thanks to my new bed skirt! (you can see the reveal here).  The good news is that no sew sewing has become my best friend! I spoke about using Stitch Witchery on my Dining Room Curtains here and decided to use that on the bed skirt as well.

I decided early on that this could be a simple project because the bed skirt isn’t going to be roughed up by little hands and is not in a high traffic area.  So now we turn to the best invention besides the Stitch Witch… velcro strips! I felt like doing an evil laugh when I came up with the plan (and I might have). And then seeing this fabric come to life in the room? priceless!

Screen Shot 2016-04-06 at 7.53.05 PMIroning and measuring… I can handle that.  I measured how long I wanted the bed skirt to drop- most are 14, 15, or 17 inches- I wanted mine to be a bit dramatic so I made it 16inches (I added an inch on each side for the seems).  I then measured the length of each side (I did each side in individual pieces).

Once I knew the hight and length, I gathered the fabric into folds in about 5 places to have extra length for the pleats I wanted to create.  I was going for a gathered look rather than a clean look.

To Use the Stitch Witchery:

  1. Fold your seams and iron at about an inch.
  2. Cut your length and put Stitch Witch in-between ironed seem.
  3. Start out giving a shot of steam from the iron and then immediately turning the heat down to medium with no heat and hold on one section for about 10-15 seconds.  (The directions do not say to use steam but I found that it holds better for me to give it a quick shot)
  4. Let sit and cool completely.
  5. Done!

NoSewSewing1Now that my seems were done, I gathered my sections that I wanted to add pleats and used about 2 inches of Stitch Witch to fold over the fabric at the top seem.  This gathered the fabric and gave me the look I was hoping for!

NoSewSewing3With the three sides finished, I put on a cheapo white bed skirt that I found here.  I did this to add some fluff behind mine and also to attach mine to.  I can easily go back and sew them together later but for now this was my fast no sew solution.   I simply attached the sticky backed velcro to my skirt and then pressed it firmly onto the other bedskirt.  I really don’t think you can get any easier than that! It has been on for almost a month now and no problems!

ORCMasterBedRoomReveal2I even had enough left over fabric for a coordinating pillow… icing on the cake!

Now for the talented sewers out there, I tip my hat to you.  I truly wish I was a better sewer and that it came more naturally to me, but it sincerely doesn’t! Maybe some day I will do a whole tutorial on how not to sew… that’s about the limit to my helpfulness in that arena.

Pin here for later!

NoSewSewing6I hope y’all are having a wonderful day!

xoxo

Well the moment has finally come! My (second) One Room Challenge Reveal! The Master Bedroom was not in bad shape, but it was a little blah for me.  You can catch up on all of the projects here.

I will admit that two of my projects did not work at all… and by that I mean… I did not even try to work on them.  I had planned on painting the side tables, but honestly I am still undecided on exactly what color to paint them!  And the curtains still need something but I was afraid to fight the pattern on the bedskirt to much so they were pushed off the list as well.

What I did accomplish I am pretty dang pleased with though! I already showed you my DIY Floor Mirror and DIY fabric chair, but what I got to add to that little area is my favorite.   This antique needlepoint was the easiest buy I have ever made!

ORCMasterBedRoomReveal911

I came across this beauty at an antique fair and the colors and size of it just struck me.  Without knowing where I would even put it, I brought it on home.  It is so intricate and even stamped 1949 from France on the back, which makes me feel a little guilty that I bought a cheapo frame from Ikea and just popped it in there!  I’m sure it deserves a grander frame but for now, Ikea won out.

ORCMasterBedRoomReveal913

The bedding is my absolute fave.  A full affiliate source list can be found at the bottom of the post.  This quilt is so simple and yet so bright and playful to me and the euro shams weren’t going to be going anywhere, those buffalo check beauties are staying forever.  But it needed a punch somewhere and when I saw this fabric at Spoonflower, I knew just where I wanted it!

ORCMasterBedRoomReveal6

I love what it adds to the simple bedding! I will share the tutorial for how I made it next week… and yes, I did it myself and no, I do not sew!  The matching pillow just needed to happen for my matchy matchy heart and I just loved the fabric that much.

ORCMasterBedRoomReveal4

ORCMasterBedRoomReveal8

ORCMasterBedRoomReveal910

I still intend to do something to the side tables and would love to hear suggestions, but overall this room has become much more me.  Ahem… I mean us.  It’s cheerier for sure!

ORCMasterBedRoomReveal1

If you haven’t seen the Dining Room make-over, make sure you pop over to it here and I will be back with tutorials next week from both rooms.  But now… we sleep.

Labor of love.  For the One Room Challenge, I picked the hardest room in my house.  You can find a full source and affiliate list at the end of the post.  The Dining Room is not only the first room you see as you enter our home, but it is multipurpose in a big way.  It becomes a painting room for me during the summer months in Texas when I can’t possibly refinish furniture in the garage, so the DIY table and the chairs all need to be easily relocated… not an easy task.

But it is also a room that has at times overwhelmed me with the memory of my Mom.  She was only able to visit twice after we moved here and once was flying down with me and the baby to move in.  She wasn’t able to help with the unloading, so while my dad, husband, and I worked to bring things in, she set up camp in the dining room and played with 4 month old Jack.  Just sitting on the floor in the empty room loving on my baby boy.  I hid myself in the bathroom and cried for a bit knowing that they would leave soon.  My best friends, my parents, and here I was leaving the nest in a big way with a baby of my own.  These are the moments you look back on and can see so clearly but have no idea that they will be so impactful.  The look on her face, the joy that the baby and she had just sitting there laughing at each other with their identical bright blue eyes.  This room had to be blue.  It had to be all the joy and the beautiful that was in that moment.

ORCDiningRoomReveal8

I did the paneling a couple of years ago and painted the navy above but it just never felt how it should.   The paint by numbers art has been a love of mine for awhile and all of the colors and landscapes just bring me joy to look at.   This room had to have joy! The biggest aspect that I kept missing was warmth.  How did I forget to add heart and warmth into it?! The curtains and lamps brought the heart right in.

ORCDiningRoomReveal11

ORCDiningRoomReveal14

I love to entertain and the silver collection has come from everywhere.  One piece was my Mom’s, friends have given them to me, thrift stores, even Target!  I am forever fighting the battle of no storage in this house so I decided that this was not something I should hide.  Let’s just have it out and ready to go!  I will also never stop mixing metals… you can’t make me.

ORCDiningRoomReveal13

I kept the table setting simple.  The chargers and plates were wedding presents, the glass bowls are from Ikea and then the little white berry bowls are a set of milk glass bowls I lucked into at an antique store.  I did not expect such a challenge when I wanted to find Peonies for my centerpiece but I apparently wanted the only flower not readily available! I’m no quitter though!

ORCDiningRoomReveal15

ORCDiningRoomReveal16

The bar cart also stayed simple.  Those of you with keen eyes will notice that the caning got another coat of navy spray paint.  I loved the blue I first did but once the room was coming together I decided it needed to be more subtle.   The metal bells hanging above I found at the Elephant’s Flea Market in New York last year and I have just been waiting for the perfect spot for them.  Happy memories ended up making this room perfect for me.  All the planning in the world but it turns out for my own spaces it just comes down to me and being able to look around and see love and memories.

ORCDiningRoomReveal1

Who knew a room make-over could help me learn so much about myself? I guess my therapy has always been creating and this was no different.  I created a space I love and did it for the person I love so dearly.  I know she is looking down and smiling.

It’s chaos. Next week is reveal day for The One Room Challenge and my calm, getting it all done attitude has come and gone.  I have no beautiful pictures for you today because the final checklist is causing some upheaval.  Mostly in the assembly department.

Last week I showed your my new peach curtains (tutorial here).

PeachCurtain1

And you could see my new chairs and a glimpse of the paint by numbers that have been hung! yay! If only it all looked so great from that little picture.

Just yesterday I sold my French Provincial Hutch that I redid years ago and it was a bitter sweet moment! I was sad to see it go, but I knew that the room needed something different now and let’s face it… nothing last forever around here:)

I found a new sideboard at a barn sale a couple of weeks ago and I love it! I am in the process of stripping and sanding it but I am still undecided on the stain I will use or if I will leave it in a stripped, natural wood state.   Kind of like the drawers I left ‘naked’ on this dresser here.

The other project that has to be completed is the new chandelier which is proving to be a harder task than I had envisioned.  Yesterday I tried to take down the old one and it turns out that it is really a two person job! I finally stopped trying when I had a vision of it falling on me and being trapped under it for days before anyone noticed.  Not to mention that I have had a really hard time envisioning the new one in the room.  I love it but I am such a visual person that until it is really all there together, I have moments of panic!

Only 120 of these to hang on there as well…

Chandelier

After that is completed it will just be about setting up and staging the whole room… I think… am I missing anything?! But if you could see the room right now, that wouldn’t seem like such an easy task;)

So let’s all just take a deep breath and get through this final push! Excited to share the final room next week!

Here are the previous weeks and progress and also jump over to see all the chaos in the Master Bedroom!

I have always wanted a large, leaning floor mirror in our master bedroom but hadn’t loved the prices when I found ones I liked… big surprise.

So I went on the hunt when I started the One Room Challenge… online, back alley mirror stores… nothing.

DIY ideas started to swim around in my mind and on a trip to Ikea a lightbulb went off.  They sell mirrored closet doors… mirror… tall… cheap… dunzo! I picked up the Vikedal mirrored closet door for $50 and then set about making it my dream mirror.  Scrap trim to the rescue!

IMG_6405

IMG_6406

IMG_6407

The steps are pretty simple…

  1. Buy mirror (they do come in different sizes)
  2. Buy some thin trim and cut to desired lengths.
  3. Adhere wood strips with mirror adhesive.
  4. Paint the trim and edges of the mirror to look cohesive.

Side note- I absolutely would have spray painted the wood trim pieces before I cut and glued them on but we have been in the middle of monsoon season here in TX so being outside to spray paint was not an option.

So for $50 and some change, I am happy! And loving it next to my painted accent chair (you can find the diy fabric tutorial here)

And just for fun because I love a good high vs low comparison, one of the mirrors I loved (link here) that inspired me next to my mirror and guess what… $400 difference!

This week I didn’t accomplish as much as I had hoped for the One Room Challenge but I did take a few steps forward by DIY’ing my own peach curtains! (if you are just jumping in, you can catch up here).

Peach was not an obvious first choice for me and I had actually thought about forgoing curtains altogether because there is such a lack of sunlight in there already, but I was also concerned that the room needed some warmth.   The peach is a brave choice for me and I was frankly not sure if I would like it until I had it up there- it was also a chore to find a light peach fabric! I wanted a velvet but that was no where to be found and don’t think I didn’t just try to buy some but all of the ones I found were darker than I wanted.

Hobby Lobby was finally the winner with a pale peach cotton and then just to satisfy my velvet need, a peach velvet ribbon that I could trim it out with!  Let’s get the tutorial out of the way real quick… my sewing machine broke.  I simply used my iron and Stitch Witchery to get the job done! Measured- cut- ironed- ironed down 1 inch edges- placed Stitch Witchery in-between the fabric- ironed again- and done! Then I hot glued the ribbon down the edge.  Seriously… not a seamstress. Shout out to all of you who are.

PeachCurtain4

And even lazier? I didn’t hem the long sides because I liked the texture that the fringe added… Bob Ross would call that a happy little accident! Oh and you are going to see a sneak peak of the dining room head chairs I found at Tuesday Morning- also not what I thought I wanted but love!

PeachCurtain2

It’s hard to share pictures when the rest of the room is still in chaos but you can also see that I hung some of my paint by numbers art.

PeachCurtain1

It’s coming together but it’s also push time! New lighting should arrive the beginning of next week so hopefully I can get it up to post about it before next week.  Here are links to the first 3 weeks of projects and don’t forget to jump over to see my DIY floor mirror in the Master Bedroom!

We are in week three of the One Room Challenge! Halfway point and I might feel a little nervous about being all squeaky clean and done in 3 weeks.  Last week I refurbished my antique tea cart (you can see here) and I still have several things on my to do list.  If you looked close you may have seen a sneak peek of my chairs…

TeaCart8

I found 4 of my six chairs for the DIY table and I love them!

As I mentioned before, I need to be able to clear this room out easily for working on client furniture in the summer- no painting outside or in the garage in TX after May.  The table is easily removed, but it felt impossible to find chairs that would look nice and be stored easily but I think I accomplished it!

These lucite chairs from Overstock grabbed my attention not only for there stacking ability, but also because they wouldn’t overwhelm the small, dark room.  I was just about to purchase them, when I saw a link to a similar one below but with a more interesting shape… cue the Angels singing! I loved these, the price, and the fact that I had a credit with Overstock made this purchase pretty easy.

I always read the customer reviews before a big purchase and all of them said they were sturdy and nice chairs.  The fact that they came in sets of two was a bonus for me and that they could stack away was the cherry on top.  I ordered two sets and am still looking for two chairs for the ends of the table that will be a bit more grand.  Thinking I will hit up HomeGoods and Target.

Sorry y’all… these are the only pics I could take because there is a lot going on in and around that space right now and it’s not all pretty 😉

So not a huge update this week but one more thing ticked off my list.  I’m also still debating curtains.  I love what they can add to a room but because of how dark the space is, it might be nice to just have the blinds.

Don’t forget to jump over and see the gorgeous fabric I picked for the Master Bedroom Challenge!

This week I finally decided on our new comforter! Pottery Barn isn’t always a choice for me due to prices, but this Comforter was on sale and I had a coupon so I decided to go for it.  I think it will look nice with my euro shams and other bedding and really brighten everything up!

I tend to prefer comforters because I get tired of Duvet covers shifting and never staying in place and this one is so soft and just the right weight, not to light and not to heavy… Goldie Locks would be proud.

The other purchase I made arrived and I am just giddy about it! I ordered this beautiful fabric from Spoonflower  and I plan on making a bedskirt from it- I’m pretty sure it will seem crazy until you see it, so I’m just giving you a sneak peak of the fabric until the whole room reveal.   Still undecided on if I will break out the sewing machine or use my Fabric Fusion Tape to keep it simple.

Next week I am hoping to have finished my DIY floor length mirror to share and I’m pretty excited about that!
